My 2000 Ranger XL with 5 speed manual has started making a noise at times when I release the clutch. The sound is a "whirring" noise, almost like a dry sleeve bearing spinning. If I get the shift perfect, it doesn't make the noise, it just makes the noise when I slip a bit.

Any guesses what might be causing the noise, and if it's something urgent?

How do I tell when the clutch is going and needs to be replaced? Last car I had with a hydraulic self-adjusting clutch failed without warning. I was driving along, seemed fine, when to shift, car would barely move. In the space of 3 miles, it went from fine to unable to move the car. Fortunately the 3 miles got me home.

I'd rather not repeat this experience with the truck :-) Is there any practical way to determine when the clutch needs to be replaced, before it fails?

For what it's worth, the truck has 70K miles, probably half highway driving. The car I mentioned had 170K miles on it when the clutch failed, so I don't think I'm hard on clutches, even in this area where EVERYTHING is uphill ;-).
