Clutch issue

I got the transfer case out finally. The case is fine no slack or odd sounds. Checked the splines are all good. Im going to drop the transmission, its the only thing i can think of.

Just wanted to give a solution. I finally got the transmission dropped after have to cut the y pipe. I found clutch fibers packed in the bellhousing. It looked as if the rivets broke loose and the clutch material got chewed up knocked all the rest loose.

So you are saying the rivets let loose causing a no smell, no noise loss of power? Thats interesting, and the first I've heard of it.

It had to make some noise and definitely a smell cause there was burnt clutch fibers everywhere. It was packed into every nook and cranny and wound around the slave cylinder.

Maybe the old lady couldn't smell. I've never burnt out a clutch, but anyone I've seen absolutely reeked for at least a day before letting go, usually after some stop and go traffic.

There's not a trace of clutch material left on either side of the disk. What ever happened it had to be catastrophic

The lady must have been banging gears. The only way I know of that happening is dropping the clutch at the wrong time.

If the slave cylinder started to leak and If it saturated the friction material, i could see it falling apart.

thanks for that visual.... all i can picture is an old lady lined up with some ricer in a first gen at a stop light...

No leaks on the slave cylinder but i can guess what happened. The hill she lived on is incredibly steep and she said the clutch went out in January when we had a lot of snow. More than likely she shifted while the wheels were spinning and dropped the clutch with some revs and the wheels grabbed cause what ever happened was violent. There are dents all along the metal backer that the material sits on.

I'm glad you got it figured out. Machine the flywheel, and put in a new clutch kit, and it will be good for a long time.

That what i'm hoping and thank you for the help.
