I am wanting to see how close on track I am to a recent problem I am encountering!

My 98 4.0 5-speed Sport, with just now turning 80,000 miles, is having some issues with the clutch. it is not slipping, and tight and strong. But what is happening is I am having a problem getting it into gear from a stop, and sometimes any gear, as if the clutch is not full engaging. I do hear a some minor tinny tinkering from the bell housing when I have the clutch engaged on some occasions. This problem is not consistent! I could go from one store to another and be fighting the shifting, then park it, come out, and go to the next with no problems!

I am very certain the clutch is good as it is not abused, and mileage is low on the vehicle. So I did check under the car and found the dust cover missing (gotta fix that now), with no unusual moisture points around the slave cylinder.

Under the hood, I looked at the master cylinder and near the CC switch of the cylinder there has been some moisture in the past, now covered with dust and dirt (as we know brake fluid loves to collect debris). I didn't have this problem until I took it in for recall work on the CC Switch, and seat bolts.

Last issue, now that it is cold cold cold.. I start it up in the morning, and occasionally I can hear the ABS pump whine for a moment on an occasion/ Again, not consistent.

I am suspecting the Master Cylinder, but wondering about the ABS pump as all lines from the master cylinder lead into the pump..

Thoughts?

Possible slave cylinder. I did a clutch on my 97 and the clutch itself wasn't terribly worn but it wouldn't shift worth a darn. Replaced clutch and slave/throwout bearing, all better.

most likely the clutch slave cylinder is worn out.

After getting a moment to work on it, I found out that the reservoir was empty, and I had to bleed out the throw out bearing! All is good!
