I've got a p0174 code. I checked on all the easy stuff but noticed on day while high reving there is a rattle from mid body sounding like the exhaust. Is it possible that the factory 02 sensor is loose and rattling inside the pipe? It might explain the code only being on that side and not activating the p0171 code that is normally coupled with it.

booster hose?

P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)

You might check the hose and connections from the intake manifold to the power brake booster. The check valve could be leaking or the booster diaphragm. If you plug the hose, reset the code and it doesn't come back then you've isolated to the source of the problem. I wouldn't drive the vehicle without power brake boost to the master cylinder.

How do you reset the code?

Either find someone with a reader that can reset it, or take off the neg battery cable for a couple minutes.

I had it up to 17mpg then this problem started now its down to 14mpg.

Hows the exhaust system on that side in front of the cat? Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor?

I just climbed under it earlier today none of the pipes look rusty the cats look fine and none of the heat shields are loose. I sprayed the MAF off and none of the hoses all the way up to the engine look damaged nor are they easy to collapse. I still can't figure out where the rattling is coming from. I'm about to pull the O2 sensor and see if thats the problem. The brakes are also very responsive so I dont know if thats a sign that the PB booster is working right but they arent any harder to brake than any other vehicle ive driven.

Usually throws both codes for the "infamous" PCV elbow.
Easy enough to check. Hope it's an easy fix. Good Luck.

OBD Codes P0171 and P0174

This code is a common code to the Sport and Sport Trac. It is normally the elbow that is located under the throttle body. It tends to crack on the bottom and needs to be removed to examine it. You can replace it with a small piece of heater hose that is 5/8 inch. But heater hose is a quick fix. The hose will soften and collapse causing other problems. We recommend you purchase a PCV elbow or the replacement part form a dealer.

New symptoms
The engine feels like atleast one of the cylinders isn't firing. At first I thought it was just a bad idle but it happens during the acceleration and even while cruise control is on. The exhaust also sems to be noticably thicker.

Pull out your dipstick and see what it looks like.

I just did an oil change with full synthetic oil. The oil was near sludge black when I got it. What am I looking for.

I've done an oil change and 2 fuel injection cleaning between when I got it about a month ago and now.

Do you have to remove the TB to get at it? I'm going to check this out tomorrow as I have these codes too. I checked the tubing directly behind the intake manifold and although it's a bit worn, it's not cracked or have any holes.
