Here is the deal, My crank broke with 41,519 miles 4.0 OHV (there is a previous Post about that if you care). Anyways I got my 99 XLS back together and it is running great, BUT the "service engine light soon" is on. So I went to a friend with a cheap OBD2 scanner and pulled a code, P1400 Manufacturer Aux Emissions Control.
I cleared the code and restarted the truck, It came back right away. My thinking is that when I had the engine upside down some Oil or antifreeze contaminated the DPFE. I replaced the hoses to the DPFE, They were starting to deteriorate and had crap inside.
So it runs fine but that bright yellow light hurts my eyes.
I spent every second of my freetime for a week replacing the crankshaft, So I'm really tired of looking at that 4.0 liter engine.
Any ideas before I spend another $60 on a part I may not need?

I'm going to try to get my crankshaft core ($55) by filing the end smooth so it looks like it did not snap off (you'd have to read my original post to know what I'm talking about)

You have one of three options here. Either you have a ground short, a bad DPFE, or a bad PCM. Doubt the PCM, the fact you were working around the engine makes a shorted wire possible, check the entire run, and last but not least, you could have a bad DPFE. That puppy DOES take a beating, so it's not unsual for it to go bad. But check your wiring first. Maybe a continuity check betwen ground and the wire might be a good idea, can be either wire, BTW. HTH

ps. Usually a DPFE error light does not affect driveability. I know, I drove 6 months with one. I knew what it was and was lazy. I should have put electrical tape on the light. (g). It isn't hurting anything.

Okay what is DPFE

Thanks Glacier991 it was very informative. SInce mine is a 92 I can read the codes without a scaner right?

Well just I replaced the DPFE, reset the computer and ran the truck for 2 driving cycles, and the light came back on. $53 down the drain. I have to stay away from the Explorer right now cause I really want to smack it with a hammer :hammer:
Any advice on checking for shorts would help
Thanks
