Less some rolling at idle, my '96 Explorer was running OK ... then I went in for an inspection sticker. Had P codes 420, 171, an 174, so I'm replacing the O-Rings/gaskets on the intake manifold and will see whether the other code is the cat converter or maybe one of the sensors.

Anyway ... the "Check Engine Light" light/bulb doesn't light. Doesn't even light when you 1st start the car. Any ideas ... could this be just a bulb issue or something in the wiring, circuit board? I did have an old jeep that lost a few dash lights and hooked up a new ground and all was well ...

Which of the codes are you jumping on with the O-rings/gasket? The CEL sounds like a bulb, but i don't know how to get to it. If you're in dire need of the inspection right now, why not unplug the battery for a bit and go elsewhere before you jump into repairs...

I tried the battery thingy and the codes are still present. I also searched for an hour in the archives and almost every thread on the 170 series codes indicated the intake problem, plus also referenced Ford recall 00M12, which this truck isn't elligble for.

Believe me ... I am the last person to throw parts at a problem ... :D
