Cold Air Intake for 91-94 Explorers

Bump. Someone should definitly sticky this forum due to the excellent content on the vaccum lines. I was debating not getting/building an open element intake system because I had no idea what those lines were. But now that I know that they do nothing besides seal vaccuum, I'm more than likely going to get one.

Note:

I did notice that when my stock box was almost original (due to pieces dry rotting) the hose with the yellow line, not the one in the plastic loom, that line ran to the drop tubing that ran next to the headlight in the front on the passenger side. =) I felt smart when I saw that.

Just informing, correct me if im wrong lol.

that is not needed for the cone filter. it should come out with the box. the only vacuume line you need to worry about is the one that has vacuume when the engine is running.

If your talking about the vacuum lines see post #76. If your talking about the fresh air tubing you can leave it or remove it; It won't help or hurt and can be left in place..

I did this mod with ease and it has working well. I also changed the Mass air flow meter to one off of a mustang gt with a 302. Stock explorer mass air is 55 mm. The one off of the mustang is 70mm. Makes a big difference and plugs right in. Thats my suggestion.

here are the pics of the filter, like i said nothing special, also yes that black stuff is electrical tape, i had to make sure it was completly sealed with the gasket, bolts and then tape. Also it seems like my car got quieter with the filter on it, is this normal? I cannot really tell a difference in power gains, it is just smoother on the throttle. it took about 35 minutes and 30 dollars to do.

that is not the kkm at all.it was a maf adaptor from pep boys for 14 bucks and a filter from wal-mart for 15 bucks. It is like a 30 dollar project including the screws with bolts from home depot.

So you're saying the review and parts listed therein and on KKM's site are incorrect? The filter in the above picture is several years old and I believe KKM supplied several different varieties that are all basically the same.

I was looking at the product reviews and could not figure out how to add this. I found a cold air intake that appears to be very high quality. I am looking to order it and was wondering if anyone here has used it? It can be found at http://www.ifab.net/products/93intake/91Ex/index.html

This is a very good product i have it on my 94 explorer and it performs better and sounds very mean. you prob already got it but i am new so i thought i would say sumthin. i almost purchased the kkm but it seemed so cheezy so i went with the whole thing and went with the ifab it is seems much better and worth the money.

A performance intake will flow more air than a stock intake and lower IAT (intake air temperatures) when running under 25mph. Studies have indicated once your vehicle reaches 25mph+ the under hood temp equals ambient temp. On the flip side the stock intake already flows more air than the engine can use (unless its heavily modified); Additionally KKM was toying with the idea of producing a cold air intake, but the benefits didn't amount to much.

So the consensus is that a cold air system will not yield major benefits unless you have sufficient engine mods to take advantage of the increased air flow.

Take a peek at the
Performance intake kit thread (lots of pages to scroll through to find info). After reading through this it appears the benefits of a better flowing intake tube are manly cosmetic as the stock intake tube flows more than the engine requires.. A performance intake tube would benefit those running cams, force induction, and Nos..

Having said that I would recommend a free flowing cone filter.. This is because the filter will flow much more air than the engine needs, but will also perform better/longer as the filter gets dirty and more restrictive.

Thats exactly what I'd do (you will probably need to fab up some connection between the filter and maf) .. A KKM landed on my feet for cheap $ so that's what I'm using.. its basically a cone filter with a mounting plate for the MAF...
