I am new to this club & sorry if this question has been asked before , In brief, I have a 1997 4.0 ltr stock sohc starting in the morning is a pain, I have a lpg conversion and it will only start and keep running if i switch to lpg it will start on petrol goes to 1500rpm and dies , I can keep it going by messing with the throttle , but when i put it in drive it hesilates.LPG is not designed to start the engine only to keep it running .
I have metered the maf,air &coolant sensors & all seem to work ok,if i switch the a/c on the problem is easier to deal with but not fixed, help

Firstly Welcome to another Brit

Check the IAC valve and posibliy clean it or replace. Try a search on "cleaning the IAC".

I don't think many of our friends in the USA know much about LPG as they don't use it. But I doublt that this has any bearing on your starting trouble. The most common prob is the IAC followed by the o rings at the bottom of the lower intake manifold. Again there is plenty of info on these and there is a service call to replace them. Can't remember the number but I think it is either 00m11 or 00m12.

You'll find lots of good info here to help keep your x going. All the best.

Thankyou howard thats the first sensible answer i have had in a year ,i have had the inlet manifold off twice now to check for cracking or broken seals but didnt find anything.
I will try the IAC cleaning
The service call, is that a freebee, if it is i will have to know more about it , so i can go and tell ford what they should have told me
thanks again

The service calls are free in the USA but check the conditions for the warranty period. It is something like 70k miles or six years and is tranferable with ownership. Our UK dealers may not be up to speed on this so get a copy of the agreement (on this board) and show them. Of course your up against the "you've modded this car so hard luck" syndrome. But it is worth a try. You can get a kit of parts and do it yourself though. I havn't had any trouble with mine yet but got very low mileage so we'll see what happens. All the best.

My x has 71,000 on the clock ,Iam going around to ford this lunch time with a printed out letter from ford found on a search for IAC , thanks for the tip i will keep you posted of the strange look i am about to get from the service manager @ benfields

Benfields ford dealer didnt want to know because he didnt have the 00m12 and told me that was for usa only and I had a LPG convertion
got back to the office and phoned ford head office told them about the info i had about my problems and wow....... here is your case no sir & take it to your nearest ford dealer and have all work done free of charge, so thankyou Howard as I only have 200 miles to go before my recall expires

I would say thanks but the only reason that I know is because of this board. So I will say a big thank you to all the members of this board for helping yet another owner with difficulties.

PS I had a feeling that the dealer would not have heard of the service bulitens. They seem to go whats one of those:D . Glad it worked out for you keep in touch with progress.

i have just had a telephone call from benfields head office who say 'we are sorry for the service you received today, the matter is being looked into' which for me has that smug feeling thanks again to everbody who has input all info:D
