ok.. i'm having the cold weather squealing going on in the mornings again. its loud as heck and the kids at the bus stops in the neighborhood all look at my truck like its falling apart when i drive by. after searching, it seems like this could be dust boot covers or exluder seals? i don't know exactly what this is referring to but it was mentioned there is a TSB on this? anyone know the TSB number and if Ford will fix this. i put up with it last 2 winters, but its louder this winter it seems. its pretty freaking loud. when all the kids at the bus stops are already looking up the road to see what that hideous noise is before they can hear or see the truck... its too loud.
if anyone knows the TSB # or anything about it, please let me know. thanks! also.. is there a place to go look up TSBs on vehicles? i'm sure there is.

So it's not a belt squeal?

Make sure your power steering has enough fluid in it. It will really whine when it gets low.

Long stretch, but:
How old is your battery?

The battery in my EB is starting to get week (especially now that it is getting cold), and when it does start, the alternator lets out a nice loud howl trying to charge it for awhile.

Just an idea,

Robb

My alternator whines when it's cold--old or new battery. It goes away when the truck warms up though, so I'm not to worried about it. Don't know if that's what your problem is but it's an idea.

You're from Georgia and complaining about the cold?

Yea but come on, with the winters we've been having for the last couple of years... we can't talk all that much :)

haha.. no i love the "cold" it was 32 here about 4 mornings straight and that's when it was whining.. by lunch its usually back up to high 60s/low70s

as far as the belts and battery and alternator suggestions.. i don't think that's it. it's not like a loud abrupt squeal.. its a consistant one and only while the x is moving. and it is in cadence with the rotation of the tires so i know its something driveline related. it only does it for a few miles, basically until i'm out of the neighborhood.. but then again, that's when i speed up and can't hear it maybe b/c of the engine.

It's the seal (dust seal) that goes on the end of the outer cv shaft when it goes through the hub. You could temporarily get rid of the noise by spraying some lube on the seal. You can get to it from underneath the truck.
