For your 93 Explorer you have basically two options. One is a single program chip($299) and the other is a Multi-program chip($325), flash tuner's aren't available for EEC4 Ford's.

The big hold up on a EEC4 Explorer is the base tuning file, or calibration code. Now since I've been doing alot of early 4.0's I have alot of these files that I've had to custom request from SCT, this can take anywhere from 2-days to 2 months to get. Like I said though that is only if I don't already have it.

From there you have a few choices in programming, you can have a low octane performance file or a high octane performance file. The changes you can do to a EEC4 file are very limited so on my end I try not to go too wild with the setups or even promise a whole lot. You can't do anything with the transmission settings, or so I've found.

Please don't get me wrong, you can get some more performance from them it's just a little harder on my end but I love a challenge so if this sounds like something you'd be interested in then please send me an email at BamaChips@charter.net. Also, if you can send me the calibration code written on the white label on the PCM, on your 93 Explorer it will be in the passenger's side lower kick panel.

Thanks, Doug.

I've done alot of searching on the subject but i cant find an answer. What exactly do these chips change that makes them so great?

SO MUCH !!!!!!

I have an Apten chip at the moment but most likely I will be moving over to a Bama program soon.

With my chip I get much better MPG's, firmer more solid shifts, quicker launches, faster acceleration, and improved over all driveablity.
Makes being behind the wheel a more pleasant and exciting experiance.

I can not say enough about the over all improvemnt. I had to remove my Apten chip for a few weeks at one point in time and it was miserabe.
Once you chip you never go back. That I can promise you.

Get ready for a dumb question....where do u put chips...? Obviously i'm assuming under the hood somewhere. Do they just install onto something or u have to tap into somewhere with them?

LOL you need to do some searching my friend ;)

The chip plugs directly into your ECU.
Simply said, you remove the cover and plug it in.
Similar to adding memory to your computer.

Now that said, it is a bit more involved :D , but that is where the searching comes in.

No question is a dumb question. I will never tell you to search, I shall attempt to help you.

Take a look at the instructions provided by Superchips at http://www.superchips.com/html/installation/0022e11001300.pdf

On your 98, you are not limited to a chip, you can use a Flasher too.

If you have any other questions, please post them.

Good luck...

it is a rather easy instal.
The only real issue is cleaning the contacts can be a bit tedious.

That being said, if ya get a flasher, you will not need to clean any contacts.

If available for your truck, the Flasher is the way to go in my opinion.

Well this sounds like something I might do in the future... I like the truck to look nice first...plus fix the essentials (hoses, belts, random other things...) Thanks for helping a noobie like me out aldive =]

In the mode of question asking.. On my 2002 sport SOHC, should I get a bigger MAF before chipping? For bests results or will the factory stuff do well..

*note I have a K&N drop in filter in a very cut box, along with a Magnaflow 2.5in exhaust...

Thanks stig.

Depending on the pcm code, some of them may not be programmable by the SCT software. If you have the ability to send the pcm in to SCT, they can pull the programming off of it,(if possible) and make a base file, then send it back to a dealer.

A flasher would be the best way to go with your being an 02. You dont have to have any aftermarket mods to benefit from tuning.

To just benefit yes, but I want to get all of the benefit, so I am wondering if a larger MAF will allow enough HP gain over stock (to notice) on a N/A engine or does the stock MAF flow well enough... Looking for N/A gain at its up-most in other words (with my set-up).

Your stock mass air will support more power then your engine in n/a form will handle. I've seen plenty of stock 4.0 SOHC mass air's running 190-200rwhp and they even use the SOHC mass air on the Explorer Express kit, I've pushed 230rwhp using it there before it finally pegged.

Also, it's alot easier to tune to, the Pro-M mass air squew(sp?) the transfer readings and therefore can cause alot of headache's from a tuning perspective. If I were to recommend a larger mass air for someone who needed one I would say to upgrade to a 80mm from a GT or F150 but stick with a Factory Ford meter because the electronics are soo much better.

If you want a n/a SOHC at it's highest then get the JBA headers, a good air intake, cat-back exhaust system and random technology's Y-pipe. Also drop back to a AGSF22 or AGSF24 spark plug depending on your year model SOHC and gap it around .045-.050. Finally not really for power but for dependability get some JBA plug wires. Round it all off with a good SCT chip/tuner like that from my company, www.bamachips.com, and you'll be around the most your gonna get without doing any internal or forced induction mods.

Awesome... then I'll just leave it be. I have been looking into your work.. I'll probably get ahold of you when the time comes.. next purchase is tires.. :| I just want a bit more power out of it... Question... What do you do for us 5 speed manual guys, with your chips? Do you still move the torque band around so that the thing doesn't fall flat on its face at 2-3rd gear shifts? Seems to me that they missed the gearing a bit.. dunno.

Thanks for your answer.

What Doug basicly does, is goes into the files that govern the ways your vehicle runs and tweaks them. These computer files govern all the little things us old carbeurated guys used to do with a wrench and screwdriver. Fuel/air flow ratios and timing adjustment for example. There is a lot that can be done that is not transmission related, but I'll let Doug fill in the details :)

Maybe that much more Horespower(from a flash or chip) will get rid of that dead spot haha.. It is fine but you either have to rev it way past what you want or shift too early to really, get what you want out of it (compared to shifting a,fun to drive car)... if of course you are racing some dumbfart in a winged wonder of a car.. haha.. Other than that it does quite well. :D

You have to forgive Wayne (hypillauto). He is a little modest. He dose custom programming as well. I got one of his flashers and I can testify that he dose great work. You can PM him as well if you have any questions.

Im sure you will be pleased with either of them as Dreamr can testify to Doug as well.
