1998 explorer sport 2 dr
I have 1998 explorer sport. 4.0 sohc. The shifter shows D in a circle then 2 and 1. the tag on the door unfortunatley has been rubbed hard so i cant make it out. It seems to be a D or O or B. I traded it for an escort to my cousin. He said he dropped the pan and the bottom of the pan looked like silver paint. And the tranny would slip wen under torque or got warm. He cant remember the code. i think it needs a new TC and a rebuild. i just dont know how to ID this transmission. The engine code is a E in the VIN. I hqve ch3cked the corums and it just confused me even more.. any help would be appreciated.

originally equipped with a SOHC and 5r55e trans.

vroomzoomboom is correct it is the 5r trans you have 1st 2nd(overdriven 1st gear) 3rd and 4th(D in a circle with the button on the end of the shifter pushed) and 5th(D in a circle with the button on the end of the shifter not pushed)

That is what the shifter readout is with a 5 speed auto.

Oh ok. Thanks for explaining how that works. I also have a 1994 f350 crew cab dually with E4OD. I thought maybe the ex transmission worked liked the E4OD.
