I have just received a 99 Explorer with front suspension damage. I am leaning toward a D30 swap from an XJ. I am having a hard time finding an axle with 4.10 gears already in it but I am told the most YJs have 4.10 gears. Other than the CAD and fabbing link mounts(I don't want leaf springs) is there any disadvantage to a YJ axle?

My other question is the transfer case can the 4405 be used with the different driveshaft? I have not looked very closely at it but it does not appear to have the same flange as a 1354. I have a few 1354 electrics, could I use one and retain the factory 4wd computer?

Thanks

I can't tell you about the YJ axle but I can tell you the 99's GEM won't work with the 1354. The 4405 is controlled differently than the 1354. You can swap the GEM but they are year specific, so the replacement has to come from a 99. The only compatible GEM that will work with the 1354 is from a 99 Ranger. It's not impossible but there are some electrical mods involved. Check here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316510 It will give you an idea if you want to get involved in that.

Thanks for the reply. Can I just switch cup flange for a yoke from a 1354?

Yes you can, but unless it's a 1354 manual it won't matter. You can put a 1354e in there from any year and just match the output flange and yoke but the 99 GEM won't control the 1354. You'll also get code flashing because the GEM is looking for input from the front and rear speed sensors on the 4405, and the 1354 doesn't have them. The only ranges you will have would be 2wd and 4lo.

I didn't state my question properly, my main concern at this time is being able to use a double cardan joint at the tcase end for the sas. For now that would make it functional with out swapping tcases. So the yoke should fit and TOD would work like normal?

Oh, sorry about that. Guess I missed that. Yes you should be able to swap yokes on the t-case. A later model 1354 t-case(98-01) would already have the right yoke, just have to make sure the output shaft splines match. Also the TOD would function the same.
