97 Explorer control Trac
Hi out there,

I have a 97 explorer control trac and the 4 high and 4 low dash lights are flashing intermitantly. I've read a number of very detailed posts on this forum from guys like Dr Bob and Alferdo C for similar problems with earlier explorers which indicate this is most likely the T case shift motor? These previous posts dealt with the BW 1354 T case but I think the 97 control trac has a BW 4405 T case? In any event I'd appreciate your comments on what I can do to address this problem and if the remedy for the BW 1354 Tcase also applies to the 4405?

Thanks,

Milo

could be your speed sensors on the transfer case need cleaning. There are two: one for the front shaft and one for the rear. If the computer determines that the speed differential is too great or is unable to get a reading, it will disable 4w drive and you will get intermittent flashing as one of the conditions. Are you able to get into 4w drive in "Auto" or "Low"???

4wd in low but not to sure about 4auto. I'll check the sensors and wiring connections first off. The lights will quit for a while after a battery disconnect but will always come back on. This is Tcase #2 that I installed about 1 year ago. It's worked good for about 10 months then the lights...

Anybody have comments on the pros and cons of a BW 1354 swap VS rebuilding the 4405 and shift motor, maybe with the brown wire mod? The 4405 cases don't seem to hold up and are in demand here while the 1354s, although older, are a lot more avilable and reasonable priced for a used one.

I took my speed sensors out and cleaned them. Put them back in and no more lights. That was a year ago. Still no problems. This check is also free. Don't buy a shift motor or anything until you do this. Save your money.
