hey I have a '98 4x2 explorer and I'm trying to convert it to 4x4. Is the control trac 4x4 system controlled by the onboard computer? And if it is, do I need to reprogram or replace the my onboard computer? Or is it a separate system? The donor car I am using is also a '98 with the control trac 4x4.

You can make it 4WD if you have a V6, the donor will have the parts you need. The controls are taken care of by three modules, the GEM, 4WD, and TOD modules. Those are all accessible behind the radio. The engine/trans PCM does nothing, but there are also a few wires you will need from the 4WD truck.

The 4WD has a short harness going to the transfer case, it plugs in under the seat. Those are the four easy items to swap. The TC and front drive parts are the obvious parts.

There are also a couple of wires in 4WD trucks that aren't in the 2WD/AWD trucks. One is a power for the 4WD in the GEM, and there is one more I don't recall, they both run in the dash and through the firewall.

Search for Aaron's BW 4406 TOD swap, it uses the exact same parts except for the TC(BW 4405). Good luck,
