i bought a 96 Explorer, 5.0, RWD. Speed density, want to convert to mass airflow. Can this be done? Engine is tired, I want to rebuild it with minor mods, would like better mileage, highway driver, lives at 2500 rpm.

Nope, it is speed density! I know the difference.

Thought they stopped Speed Density back in the early 90's

It's speed density, I would like to know whether another computer and wire harness would plug into the firewall plugs and work for Mass airflow.

Pretty sure that is maf but what do I know I only work on every explorer and f150 in my neighborhood

look at your air box. anyplace between it and the throttle body is there a wire connector with 5 or so wires that goes into a connector that is roughly 1 inch by 1 inch?

here, this will make it more simple for you. no, we are not here to make fun of you, or anything like that.
this is from my ford service cd. this is for a 96 explorer with a 5L motor

I'm not dumb guy, I have a 67 Fairlane with a 351w, EFI harness from a 91 HO mustang I wired into it. I thought the same thing as you and Ron Morris when I bought this Explorer. I bought it unseen over the phone, picked it up with a trailer. Got home, popped the hood and said wtf over. I will take a picture tomorrow and post it.

Perhaps someone modded it before you got it. Therefore it could be.

why would someone go backwards in time?

My guess is that you will need an EFI harness and CPU. With Speed density you have a lot less wires to run the system.

Unless someone completely re-did the harness (no idea why) then it has a MAF factory. I bet your MAF is hiding in the air box like posted above.

The engine harness connects to the body harness next to the ecu, if it has been modified swap in a stock engine harness and the correct ecm if the one in your vehicle has been changed. I'd like to see a picture of the part number and catch code on the ecu in your explorer.

Quite a thread! Regardless of what system it has now, if the original MAF system was removed to allow use of a different engine which had S.D., it would run like ****, if at all. I have switched both ways in F-150s, which came with S.D. up till well into the '90s. MAF in Mustangs came 50-State in 1989. Trucks then continued with S.D., smaller injectors, no roller cams, completely different PCMs.

I once argued with a guy till Hell froze over, who ran a big block S.D. in preference to MAF, claiming more HP with S.D. MAF gives far more flexibility, as the last input to PCM really needed: S.D. assumes 302 cubic inches of air sucked in every two revolutions. Not true, as engine wears, oil viscosity changes with temperature, etc. Measuring amount of air gulped is far better, IMO. Also, S.D. will NOT WORK with forced induction, so no turbo-charging or supercharging. MAF allows use of either, camshaft changes, etc. Just my two cents....imp

ECU is an EEC-V, ML2-336. How do you load a picture on here?

upload the pic to photobucket or a picture sharing site, then copy the link and post it here, or become a elite member

I'm not sure how to do that, if some one wants to get me and email address I can send it that way.

If the PCM is an EEC-V, it certainly is (or was] a mass airflow system. Cannot imagine what it would take to rework the PCM to eliminate the MAF and adapt it to a MAP.

On the '96 5.0, the MAF is hidden in the air filter housing, I'd be very very surprised if it is not there.

I just went out and disassembled the air filter housing, and you are right! I was wrong! I've had 2 others look at it who are wrenches and guess they don't know Ford. Thank you, thank you. I'm a happy cat now. Like I said up top, I bought this sight unseen, guy told me it had 100k and was nice. This is a dealer in Basteop, Tx. I got it home and took it to get the oil changed, while driving it I noticed the speedo and tach worked but not the odometer, I was pissed. And of course I paid premium dollar for something it did not have (low mileage). Anyway, motor is tired, going to buy a junkyard motor, rebuild and swap them out is the plan. Would y'all leave the stock cam in it and just change rockers?
