I have a 93 with an automatic trans. It worked fine on a 60 mile trip. The car sat for a few hours and when I started out again the converter would not go into lock up.The fluid level is ok.What could it be?
Thank you.

Sounds like what I'm dealing with, My 92 XLT 2WD did the same thing after a 30 mile drive, idled for about 90 seconds, then started off again and had to return the 30 mile trip with no lockup. I recently had the original torque converter fail (149k miles) and I was able to get about 500 miles out of it before it did this. I've been told either there is something clogged in the control valves, or the solenoid is shot, or the solenoid is clogged. I've ran into a snag removing the control valve plate - all the bolts are out and it doesn't want to drop, but its sloppy... I was quoted $150 labor for the job to make sure the ports were clean, and if required install a new solenoid (provided by me, since they had none in stock, ford gets $48 for the solenoid) - I think I should have taken that option - I'm sick of getting ATF in my hair.

If you find out any good news, please pass it along. I'm really starting to miss my Explorer...
