Well, I got in my Ex, started up as usual, drove about 1 mile when it lost power (fail safe mode), lights all lit up and the the dreaded "Coolant Overheat" warning comes up. Temp shows pegged. Fortunately, I was still close to civilization and able to pull into a gas station. Checked coolant - it was a little low and the engine was barely warm. It's 20 degrees outside. After topping off coolant and waiting a while, still shows maxed out temp. Called for a tow.
Anyone else had this issue? And what was done to fix it? Apparently, the temp sensor can go bad. Thanks for any input/advice.

I have a 2020 explorer and it did something similar to me two days ago except it was -17*f out. I used my scan tool and got a P1299 code and was able to clear it. I have a cylinder head temp sensor on order, fortunately it is pretty cheap ($6 or so). I see your issue was about 2 months ago. What was your issue?

It was the temp sensor. Got it towed to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty. This issue was 2 years ago - shortly after I bought it. No issues since then. I didn't realize that I could have cleared the code. Oh, well...

I should have read the year 🤦.
Glad it was only the sensor. Since clearing the code it hasn't come back so fingers crossed it doesn't but I might replace the sensor for piece of mind.

The guys at the dealership said it was the software but recommended replacing the sensor anyway since it didn't cost extra. Peace of mind is priceless! And at least you know how to clear the error in case it happens again. 😉👍

This happened to me yesterday evening to my 2022 Explorer. It just recently turned over 40K miles.
I didn't have a chance to check my coolant level, or mess with codes. It's at the dealer for diagnosis and (hopefully) warranty repair. Maybe I'll put my OBDC device in the glove compartment after this...

I had mine towed to the dealer and they confirmed a software glitch with the temp sensor. Got it back the next day. Apparently there's not much you can do until their techs reset the sensor.

My issue ended up being a leaking water pump, now replaced.
