I bought a '92XLT (37k) from the original owner last month. Not a scratch on her inside/out. She runs STRONG! I did notice a couple things.
1) the idle sounds like it has a subtle surge. I can't feel it or read it on the tach (steady at 750), but standing outside while it idles, there is a faint surge in idle. So subtle I have to point it out to most people. One guy suggested new plugs and wires with the next oil,air filter change.

That said, I live in Alaska with only two mechanics in the immediate 350 Miles. How much would plugs and wires plus labor cost on average. If not careful, people up here will pay $90 for an oil change.

2) I have all the records from previous oil changes...been done like clockwork. The oil is pretty dark in color though. Should I be at all concerned?

You guys are TRULY the best answers around!

I think most of the 4.0's have that slight surge from the factory (it's not a defect, it's an attribute) plugs / wires may be expensive, the plugs are kinda a pain, my suggestion is do it yourself :-) Get some decent Wires (Bosch, or ummm whatever the other people like (use the search function). but really the wires should be fine at 37 (but hey Alaska will prob do strange junk to things). Basically don't worry about that slight surge b/c it's not going away, just imagine that you have a performance cam or something. :D The oil naturally gets dark in a car (theres a name for it, but I don't remember) enjoy the X

Should be around $60-90 for labor. Add the cost of whatever plugs and wires you are getting.

Yes all 4.0's have the idle you described. Barely noticeable on the tach, but yet you can feel it.
