I need new ball joints and U joints, and I was wondering how much a dealership will charge me to get each of those replaced (besides an arm and a leg).

I'm not too familiar with those parts of the suspension, so any help would be great.

Hartman,

I'm curious, but how did you determine your u-joints were bad?

When I put it into 4WD mode there's a VERY LOUD popping noise coming from the wheels, I was told by some members of this board that it was bad U joints.

And, knowing the history of Explorers, it probably wouldn't hurt to replace the ball joints because they've never been replaced on my Ex.

If it's coming from the wheels then it's not U-joints. Only early models have u-joints that connect to the wheels. I would check the hub assembly for a noise like that.

I dropped about $800 a year ago on a project like this. See when they are in there they can easily get at brake pads, ball joints, u-joints, bushings etc. Its kinda a pain but may as well do it all at once. Oh yeah I forgot that included an alaignment as well
