Greetings;

I was wondering for future reference, whether or not my 93 could take a 4.6 engine, in addition to the matching tranny (automatic). How much alterations would have to be done? Or worse how many fabrications and or custom modifications would have to be done, in order for this to be a smooth transition. I am really considering a 4.6/tranny transplant, of course in addition to the computer swap. These motors don't seem to have that annoying lifter issue, besides I am looking for more horse power/torque. What say you? Thanks in advance!

Best Regards:)

I'm just guessing, but I'm betting a 4.6 wouldn't come close to fitting the engine bay of your '93. If you want to get rid of the 4.0, go with a 5.0 from a 95-2001 explorer. Lots of information on this site for it, and it is a very strong very reliable drive train.

I'm sure you could do it.. if you're willing to drop more money into it than the truck is worth. But that depends on if you already have the parts/engine to do the swap already. If not, I couldn't justify doing it and would just rather go get a 97' 5.0 for as much as it would cost for the engine/drivetrain and time it would take. Sorry.. I don't know about the technical aspects of doing a swap, but I know it'll be a PITA.. heh

I'm considering this exact swap a few years down the road, fully knowing that yes the engine will be worth multiple times more than the rest of the truck.

In short if you have the determination, money, and patience anything is possible. In long you will have to get a new wiring harness, computer, engine mounts, probably gonna wanna beef up the suspension for the added weight. Try searching this site for more info. If you just want a little more power there are easier ways depending on how greedy you are. Good luck

Actually the weight isnt going to be that bad. Im willing to bet a 4.6L barely weighs a bit more than a heap of iron 4.0L. The 4.6L will fit under the oem hood as it generally sits lower than a 5.0. However the 4.6L is quite a bit wider than a 5.0. The problem areas on the early generation is the steering shaft and the steering box is in the way of the coolant/oi lfilter manifold. motor mounts will have to be fabricated not so tough. Wiring harness will be fun. if you keeping it 4wd its going to be alot more work. ALl in all if you havent done much custom fabrication you may want t osettel on a SBF swap.

The 2V version is an easier swap, as it is a little narrower.

you would have an easier timefitting a 5.0 in as opposed to the 4.6 because the 5.0 is more slender even tho its about 21 cubic inches more (if im not mistaken). plus the 5.0 has a bit more torque and would be alot cheaper.

One of the problems however is on GEn 1 explorers the steering box is on the inside of the frame which will cause an issue. There is one guy over at therangerstation that was working on a 4.6L 2v 4wd swap in a earlier chassis however he hasnt dug in that far I belive. There steering si goin gto be a major issue. Even o nthe truck above the steering shaft routing had to be modified.

I want to do this. Not anytime soon, but I definitely plan on doing this. I have a Mustang GT with a slightly modified Modular engine, but I plan on replacing it with a TEKSID block sometime soon and a t56. So, I want to put my existing block and trans in my 92 Ford Explorer. The truck is old and still runs, but it's my pops truck, so I have to keep it alive.

Were you able to get started on this? How similar is the Ranger Set up above with the set up to the Exporer? Am I better off trading my slightly modified Modular block for a forged 5.0 liter? I seriosly would prefer to stick with a modular, but if fabrication and parts are too significant of a job to do on my own then maybe I forgo modular for 5.0.

Anyone with links?

Hopefully I don't sound stupid with this question but did they have 5.0s
's for 1st gen explorers?

I have an older S-10 I was planning on sticking a 454 in. It would be a mean ride. But recently I've been thinking of something a little different. With a 4x4 during winter why not stick a 5.4L Triton V8 in my explorer :p:
I've always been fond of them Triton V8's :)

I think to much.

Have fun and I hope your swap will work out for you, I've heard of people who have done the swap your planning :)
