I have a 2001 Explorer Sport with just under 200,000. Occasionally the transmission slips somewhat and I let off the gas and it then I can reapply the gas and it gets going.

Fluid level is fine.

When I was driving it today I was leaving a parking spot and it started to slip, I adjusted the shift level and the problem seemed to go away.

It seems to me the physical position of the lever would result in either neutral or drive and not cause the slippage I am occasionally experiencing.

Is it possible it could result in the slippage?

The detent must for each gear much be fully engaged or the transmission will have issues. So yes, a mis-adjusted shifter could cause issues for you.
