Hello guys, I'm new to the forum but was wondering if someone could help me out a bit. Today I tried to install a new aftermarket cd player in my 1994 Ford Explorer and in the process messed up. I didn't see which but some red/yellow/black wires touched, there was a spark and my dome light and door lights went out. Now when I wire the CD player up it will not power on, so I tried the old cd player and had the same results. My interior lights and cd deck will not turn on. I have no idea what I am doing to be honest, I don't know if I blew a fuse and if I did how to fix it. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Guarantee its a fuse, the fuse panel is like right above your left foot (when driving) theres a black pop-off cover on it, its like 5" long, and maybe 4" wide.

Just get a shop light or something bright down there, and go through the fuses, im not too sure off hand which one it is; thats why I replaced ALL my fuses with Blow&Glow ones lol

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but I have to buy new fuses and replace them until I figure out which one it is or do I just have to pull them out and put them back in or something? Thanks for your help!

Lol pull them out, see what amp size they are (right on the top it will say anything from 5 to like 35) then just goto autozone, murrays, advance ap, even walmart, meijers, and krogers have them; then put the new one in.

(A fuse has a thin piece of metal in there, which is designed to break when theres too much load, or a bad connection, like touching a pos, and neg wire. When it happens, the little piece of wire in the fuse breaks, so it cuts off the power, to save your electronics)

Ahh ok, thank you very much, what a great help. I just wish I could find some sort of diagram or something to know which fuse it was haha.

that one should be it...
but id still just get down there with a pair of needle nose pliers, and check each one, when i bought mine, there were like 4 fuses blown...i only found that out by pulling each one out, if its not blown put it back in; theres only about 10-15 so it takes you maybe 7 minutes to check them all

and no problem LOL, trust me, ive asked my share of stupid questions too :p::

lol where did you find that diagram I've been searching for one since I woke up haha. So I should be able to tell if a fuse is blown or not by looking at it correct?

well I pulled the fuses out and none of them looked broken, the only little metal piece seemed to be internal. and according to the diagram fuse 8 is supposed to be 10 watts but the fuse in mine is 20 watts ? lol

Yes, very easily. Most generally it will look slightly black...

mine look like this:

and the middle metal piece looks fine on all of the fuses =/

I just read somewhere that the interior fuse is probably fine but the fuse under the hood is probably blown. Where is that fuse box located and do you know where I can find the fuse diagram for that? Thanks for all the help

well i just checked all the fuses under the hood as well. I haven't found one interior or exterior fuse that is blown... this is driving me nuts lol

please can anyone help me I only have a couple of hours or so before dark hits and I'd like to try to fix this before then, thanks for any help

hmmmm...and you're sure all the fuses were ok? try taking the negative terminal off of the battery for a couple minutes then put it back on. may sound silly but it might work. if not then i'd double check the fuses again. very carefully and not in a hurry

I replaced the fuses, and a fuse inside of a wire, and all the little fuses (not the big ones) under the hood. all the big ones are clearly fine. I checked any fuse i didnt replace with a meter and all have low resistance. i unhooked the negative for a few minutes, that didnt do anything.

nothing seems to be working, now i have no radio and no interior lights and back to square one :(

Sounds like for the most part you were checking these fuses visually. You said you have a meter....so set it to continuity....and test the fuses without taking them out of their sockets. Just measure across the little metal pieces on the top of the fuses. You should be able to go through the entire fuse panel in a minute or two.

i did this but like I said I replaced bout 75% of the fuses, the rest were all fine. I checked visually and with the meter.

Is there an amp or anything else I should be worried about?

That wouldnt have anything todo with it; but I would be willing to bet money that theres one motherf*cker down there thats blown, trust me, when I went through mine, THREE times, i found another one.

Instead of visually looking, do what I said earlier, PULL each one out, it might take a few minutes, but its the only way to be sure its not the fuses.

Sorry I couldnt reply earlier, I had to work all day; just got home :p:

yea I literally replaced all of the small and medium fuses. The fuses under the dash are medium, replaced them all. Under the hood there a small and large fuses, i replaced the small ones, and the large ones are plain to see aren't broken, so it's got to be somethin else =/
