1997 Explorer XLT
I bought a 97 Ford Explorer XLT back in early November and noticed a few things after driving it for about a week and would like to know if its normal.
First thing is... When I start it it starts right up but if the engine is warm it takes a little longer to turn over. I replaced the fuel filler pipe because it had a rust hole and I thought the fuel was not getting enough preasure... It didnt help!
Next is... when the vehicle is running it smells like oil burning...it does not smoke and I changed the oil but still smell it sometimes, Like a gm car that you abuse!!
Last thing is... when I kind of gun the engine, it makes like a roaring noise until it changes gears...kinda hard to explain but it seems like it trying hard to get up to speed! It gets up to speed without any other problems except for the roaring.
It has the 4.0 sohc and 4 wheel drive.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this... thank you:exp:

Is the truck using any oil? Level dropping? Any leaks that may be burning off the exhaust manifold? The roar might be the cooling fan. It's has a clutch which may be frozen, can you spin the fan by hand when the engine is off? It should turn, with some resistance.

The truck goes through no oil at all and my oil preassure guage is always in the normal range.... After you mentioned if there is any leaks and it looks like my valve covers are leaking. Thanks because for some odd reason I didnt think of that.
As for the noise... the fan works fine! Maybe they all sound like that... it's a big vehicle to be powered by a V6 and probably takes a little more effort!
Thank again

Your oil pressure gauge doesn't actually tell you any thing about the pressure. It is an On/Off thing that reads normal oil pressure if there is a nominal amount, like over 5-10 pounds. Less and it will read zero. I'd put get some degreaser and clean the motor, and see if the smell improves. As for the roaring does the RPM gauge go up when it happens?
