i bought this hood scoop off ebay for a total of $80 including shipping. last night i cut the skin off the hood with a four inch angle grinder. started pop riveting the hood on and it seemed like everything was going wrong.. the gun broke, drill bits were breaking.. so i woke up first thing this morning and went to the store, came back, finished up pop riveting the hood on.. starting bondo'ing it in.. and this is my final result. tell me what you think!

two days ago i bought a 21 gallon air compressor, a spray gun, black paint, and everything i could possibly need to paint my car.. does anyone have any tips about doing this? the paint says it's "spray ready".. i've never used a spray gun or painted a car before.. i will literally be spraying everything on the car except the windows, wheels, lights and luggage rack. i'm nervous about spraying the plastic but i already primed it sooo any advice would be greatly appreciated !

I think it looks pretty good so far.

Here's my advice. I would take the hood off, or another panel as your "Test victim". Paint this first and see how it comes out. If you run into problems, you can correct at this stage and not be stressed with the entire truck having the same problem. If it takes you 10 tries on the "test victim" to get the results you want, then so be it. If you run into a problem then what for the panel to dry, then re-sand and give it another try. You'll have better end results doing it this way.

....you asked....

Couple things wrong with that hood...

First off the cowl is WAY to big for your X..
The 'spine' on the hood looks out of place. You would have been better off with a smooth, 'spine-less' style.
Your compressor is WAY too small
There is NO SUCH THING as 'spray ready'....mixing and thinning will be req'd.

On the bright side:
Your one of only a couple guys that have done this type of work yourself. Most guys would have bought an 'over the counter custom part'....
It looks centered, and aligned correctly
And the body work looks good

21 gallon air compressor shoudl be able to get the job done. you won't be able to paint continuously, but you should be able to use it to paint. me and a buddy use a 15 gallon to paint a car, that took a long time, but it worked.

if the can says "spray ready", that's code for this paint is premixed and needs a really good shake/stir (i'd just stir good, keep air bubbles out of the paint). beware though if it's black it'll show any imperfection, and i mean any. just make sure you've taken care of this. (i'm did 8 hours of body work on mine today). make sure you strain the paint before spraying. also make sure you have a "drier" on the air compressor lines to the spray gun. water will accumulate because of the pressure being built up (like filling up your tires as gas station, water sometimes comes out). you don't want this through the gun...

if you can, i'd get some other cheap paint, and practice first.

good luck with it!

rivits was not a good idea.
Odds are good it will come back to haunt your mud work in the near future.

Other than that it looks fantastic.

I'll look for you next time I drive through Columbia.

other than it looks like it belongs on a chevy, your work is good tho

I didn't want the cowl part to arc like it did but with the way the hood is shaped going down towards the front, mounting it against the hood makes the fiberglass bend that way naturally especially with the design with the spine in it. I didn't expect it to come out like that.. but it's too late to turn back now. I wanted one with the spine in it because I think it gives it more of a modern look. But you're right about the arc.. the scoop did not have that arc until after it was mounted. By then it's just like.. it is what it is.
