Hey all. I was driving my 98 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC around town the other day. I stopped in front of my house and went to start the engine again. The engine almost turned over but then died. I have not been able to start it since.

At first I thought it was the battery because it was showing a low reading on the dash. I took it into the auto parts store when they said it tested bad. So I replaced that but it did not start. Next, I looked at the starter and it was very corroded from an anti-freeze leak I had. Put a new starter on but still no luck.

Next, I checked the pressure on the fuel rail where there is a schrader valve connection. I didn't have a pressure gage but there would be only a small dribble of fuel that would come out of the valve after turning on the ignition key. The dribble would subside after about .5 seconds of having the valve open. This lead me to believe there was not enough fuel being delivered from the pump. Also, I have had bank 1 and 2 running to lean DTCs in the past and have never got them to go away. (changed O2 sensors, cleaned MAF).
There is now a good constant flow at the fuel rail now but the engine still does not start.

I checked the spark on two plugs (one on each bank) and it had good spark there.

At this point I am a little stumped on what could be the problem. The only thing I can think of is that there could be a bad fuel injector (no fuel entering cylinder) or bad spark at one of the other four plugs that was not checked. I plan on checking the spark at the coil pack for all connections tonight. Do not think it is the wires since I changed those out a couple months ago.

You need to check the fuel pressure with a gauge.

I had the same problem last year - had lean codes for both banks for awhile and tried several things to clear them [clean MAF; checked for vacuum leaks] to no avail. had the fuel filter replaced and the codes cleared and never came back.

if the engine is getting air and fire [spark], it is probably a fuel issue.
