Ok First let me say I love my used 92 EB 4x4!!!

Here is whats going on my wife gets up in the AM to go to work. She puts the X in reverse backs out puts it in OD and nothing. Shift back to reverse nothing! Shift to neutral and wait a min put it back in gear and the X is fine the rest of the day!!

So I tried it in AM shifted to D & OD & R without moving and it would engage fine. Put in Reverse back out of Driveway goto OD , D ,1, 2, R nothing. Wait a min in neutral and shift to OD and tranny is fine.

I went as far as towing my 20ft Center Console Boat 3000lbs+/- with no slips and all gears shifting fine???? I am at a loss. I took to aamco to have the free diagnostic now it seems to take abit longer to engage in am.

They said I had flair between 2 & 3 and it would be $1700 to rebuild??

I'm no tranny expert, I don't even play one on TV , but have you checked the fluid level? Have you changed the filter ever?

Yeah

I checked the fluid level and considering I have owned this X since May 5, 2004 No I have not changed the fluid and filter yet LOL

I did speak with a Transmission Shop and they told me it sounded as if it was 2 quarts low and there was a bulletin that said Ford Tranny dipsticks were mismarked so when it says full it really is LOW.

Im gonna drop the pan tomm and change the Filter & Fluid

Thx

Eric

Certainly fits the low fluid scenario. It's a lack of control pressure. (e.g. hydraulic pressure within the system).... and on that year.... given your symptoms. low fluid would top my possibles list. You were asked if you replaced the filter for a separate reason. SInce you have not, not a likely candidate.

WOW!!!! I added the 2 quarts yesturday and this morning no problem!! All the transmission shops but one said oh yeah its a hard seal problem or it needs to be totally rebuilt.

Cant believe I found one ( a hole in the wall shop too ) shop that gave me this info over the phone about Ford mismarking dipsticks.

I actually found out the Used Car Dealer had changed the filter in the tranny when they serviced vehicle before selling and most likely didnt have access to bulletin about dipstick.

Thx,

Eric

Any more info on this bulletin? TSB# or anything like that? Any other specifics? I'm just not comfortable with "It's a Ford so it needs 2 additional quarts after you reach the full mark". An overfull transmission can cause its own problems. I just checked Alldata's list of TSB's and didn't see anything based on the TSB titles.

Another possible scenario could be an improperly installed filter, and adding 2 quarts raised the fluid level in the pan high enough to submerse the point where the air was being sucked in. (Just kinda "free-thinking" here). If it were me I think I'd maybe drop the pan and make sure the O-rings were on the filter and the right screw was used to hold it in place. Just to be sure. I mean it's certainly possible you isolated the culprit, but it would mean that the service on the Ex by the selling dealer was the first transmission fluid change (otherwise we would assume someone else had this problem and solved it).

Cosmo was acting the same as yours and it turned out when I got the fluid and filter done, the shop forgot to install the o-rings on the filter causing it to act like it was low on fluid. Like Glacier991 suggested, you might want to drop the pan and check things out.
