I ran my explorer through a river that was a little too deep and nuked the engine right after I got it. I paid $4000 for a remanufactured motor - not too bad because I only paid $1500 for the truck with 130k miles. Ever since I got the motor replaced the truck has been going through about 1qt of oil every 1000 miles. I took it back to the shop about every two months and complained and every time they replaced something and claimed to fix it but they never did. About a year later I finally decided the truck must have bad rings after I noticed some smoke out of the exhaust on startup. When I took it into the shop they declared it must have been caused by heat damage to the engine and thus the three-year replacement warranty was void!!!!! WHAT!!!!! The transmission started going out about this time so I gave up, parked the truck and bought a Mazda 626. Recently I got a hair up my butt to replace the transmission myself. I started up the truck and moved it about 30 feet. When I climbed under it I noticed a small pool of oil and a drip coming from the gasket where the engine joins the transmission. The metal gasket was broken, bent out, and had about a 3/4" gap where it was holding the motor and transmission about 1/8" apart spitting out oil. *******S!!!! If you live in the Denver area DO NOT GO TO ALPINE AUTOMOTIVE TO GET YOUR TRUCK WORKED ON! I'm going to replace the gasket MYSELF when I get the tranny out.
