Crossover?

I've got a '97 Mountaineer with the JBL system, and I was curious where the crossover is in the system. Is it in the back with the amp or in the HU?

crossover? in a STOCK Explorer.....never heard of it......they did have External Amplifiers though....but you already knew that.

Oh its in there. I've blown the sub, and you def notice the bass gone. Its got one somewhere...

I dont think theres a crossover. For the JBL system each door has a 1" and a 4" speaker. These speakers are too small to produce the proper lows, hence the loss of bass

I'm not expert on Explorer factory audio but it would be safe to assume that if they installed a sub that they would have included a crossover for the sub. You are on the right path it could have been built into the amp or the head unit. A cheaper alternative would have been to install a coil somewhere inline with the amp and the sub and or a resistor inline with the door speakers both of which are found in passive crossover units. Some of the older members may remember passive crossovers. Today almost all automotive crossovers are electronic. Coils and resistors are how a lot of home audio 2 or 3 way speakers are set up. Resistors are what they use in products like bassblockers.

I've got the same damn problem, but I've gone thru three of those &*%kin subs, the last one being from the '98 Mach system. What I need is a sub made by anyone other than JBL or Ford. The good news is that any speaker you hook up in that spot will fix your crossover problem, even a resistor might work, has anyone tried that? WIth 5,500,000 x's on the market (Probably half with a sub)surely somebody is tapping this market with a reputable replacement. Anyone?

the main crossover is built into the control unit in back. also the front doors have a crossover inside the speaker pods

Actually in the normal first order crossover (ex: bass blockers) a capacitor is used. A resistor alone does NOTHING to attenuate bass besides cutting power.
