The plastic cover for the cruise control On/Off switch on my '96 XLT started to soften and melt. It never really felt hot when driving, but when I'd come out of work in the hot sun the button cover was soft and gooey so that I would leave a finger print in it. I rarely use CC, but every time I did it worked fine.
A buddy of mine was parting out another Explorer and the switch on it was in much better shape so I decided to swap it out this afternoon. I think his X was a little bit newer, but the switches looked identical so I decided to throw it on without checking part numbers. That was mistake #1.
Mistake #2, I didn't check to see if cruise control worked right before doing the swap out. Its probably been several weeks at least since I used it last.
I swaped out the switch - the pins looked identical - and took it for a drive. The "speed cont" light would not come on and the CC system didn't engage (uh-oh). So I pull the switch out and look a little bit closer at the connections, everything seems ok. That's where I notice the part number labels are different:
My original:
UPN105
F67A-9D809-BA
2925A W
The newer one:
UPN150
F87A-9D809-BA
2287B W
The next thing I did was put my original switch back in and take it for another drive. The light never would come on and again CC wouldn't activate.
I checked the fuses and they were all good - so that wasn't the issue.
I pulled the switch membrane cover off the both and looked at the circuit board inside. They are a little bit different. In my original unit there is a little resistor under the middle of the switch cover where the damage first started to occur. So maybe it was a bad switch to start with and something got hot - but I really think it was just the sun-light and age.
Right now I have the orignal switch installed with the cover off the newer switch so it looks normal. The only problem is that the cruise control system is not working at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I might check? All of the connections seem to be good. I'm thinking:
1) I either fried something else when I put in the newer switch for a few minutes
2) The original switch is bad and the new one was incompatible
3) The CC system already had a problem and both switchs are ok (I doubt this because it always worked when needed)
Thanks for any help!
