1991 XLT
We have a truck scale at work, and last Friday I got the idea to park my new used 1991 XLT on it and find out exactly how much it weighs.

Subtracting my own weight, and including a quarter-tank of gas (I suspect it has a 30-gallon tank, as I put in $20 when it was empty that morning and got 6.9 gallons, which comes out to 28-30 gallons ballpark), and nothing inside it except a half-empty laundry basket, my bone-stock 1991 4 door 4x4 XLT weighs 3,720 pounds.

Just throwing it out there for those who'd like to know. It's a bit more accurate than just taking the number off the spec sheets :D

First gen Explorers have a 19. something gallon tanks, just under 20. I am not sure the density of gasoline, probably its around 9-11 pounds per gallon?

wow my eddie baurer without me in and a quater tank of gas weighs 4,310 its 4x4 and the only mod is 31x10.50 tires

Last time I checked my 94 xlt was 4,607 with manik4x4 grill gaurd, 1 12" sub 2 amps, and all my emergency lights and power supplies. Thats minus my weight and with 95xlt power leather seats which I installed. Also with 31x 10.5 tires.

anyone weighed a 1st Gen X sport? I estimate mine to be about 4000 but I don't know

Curb weight can vary a LOT between two 1991 Explorers, or any other vehicle, for that matter, but ones that are available in both two-wheel, and four wheel <all wheel also> drive setups, plus widely variable engine sizes, minimal (base model) to extensive sound deadener (XLT, Eddie Bauer), two or four doors, etc. My first Explored was a bottom of the barrel, four-door 4x4. I recall that it weighed about 3900 lbs. The second one (Eddie Bauer, four-door, 4x4 was scrapped yesterday weighed 4400 (and that was with 14-inch Aerostar steel wheels on it). Both Explorers were 1991 models (as is my current one) with 4.0 litre V-6's and auto trans

BTW Yes you can physically bolt the Aerostar 14's on your Explorer, just don't try to DRIVE it unless you ream the centres to fit over the hubs!

1991 Explorer wheel well flares

I don't seem to be allowed to post a new thread, so I'll just throw this out here. I picked up a set of factory fender extensions from an older Pathfinder or FourRunner, I am not sure which it was anymore. Anyhow, they are an almost EXACT fit to my 1991 Explorer. If you need to keep over-sized wheels inside the body, you may want to look into it.

Don't forget about that advanced weight reduction technology aka rust

gasoline weighs just a hair over 6 lbs per gallon

My '96 sport weighs in at 4600# pretty consistently, i seem to be at the scrap yard a few times a year.

my 92 4x4 with 33x12.50 and me(250) and two really heavy subs weigh 4601

mmmmmm subs ! I love mine smothered with jalapenos

I used to take every vehicle I owned (lost count at almost 100 vehicles -when one breaks down, fix the one that needs the least repairs next, transferred my insurance 26 times in 1986) to the commercial truck scales after hours, the scale can be read from outside as a courtesy to truck drivers checking their weights, due to some roads and bridges having weight limits.
