Custom roots supercharger installation, advice needed...

Over the last few weeks I have been doing some fabricating to fit an Eaton m-90 blower on my 4.0 ohv Explorer. The project is nearly done with the exception of powdercoating and polishing some parts, but I have been having trouble trying to get a good a good mass air sensor and six 24lb injectors to finish off the job. I tried getting in touch with Granatelli Motorsports about their mas and if they could make me one for my application, but they havent answered any e-mails yet. All the other mas makers I've looked into don't seem to have any sensors for this vehicle, or for supercharged applications, listed in their online catalogs.
If anyone here knows where I could get a good, high quality mass air sensor from that will work for what I am doing could you let me know where to find it at?
I am also going to swap out the injectors and need to know if the 24lb injectors will be enough to fuel a 4.0 with 8lbs of intercooled boost, 410 cam, and lightly ported heads? Should I go larger that 24", and has anyone found a place that will sell them in a set of 6, not 8?

Did you try pro-M. They make all sorts of maf sensors. My friend has one on his supercharged mustang. If you contact them they could probably calibrate one for your needs.
 






Stay away from Pro-M!!! They Suck! Read the post about the Explorer Express supercharger and you'll see that this re-enforces this.

Anyway, the stock meter will be too small, it's almost too small for a Whipple supercharged 3.0. IF you can get a good chip tuner that uses quality software like SCT then I would highly recommend getting a Mass air from a 96-98 4.6 Mustang GT or F150 4.6/5.4 they are the same. Then they'll have to tune it in for you from there to work with the rest of the programming. It's not a big deal if you've done it with SCT stuff but I won't speak for Diablo junk.

I've been away from here for a while but I've done 3-4 custom Supercharger setups on SOHC's now. Two Eaton M90's and the same Paxton on 2 different SOHC's. A number of Mustangs in the mid 90's came with 24 lb. injectors and MAF sensors that were calibrated to that flow rate and that were a larger diameter than the stock Explorer. Usually can be picked-up inexpensively and work quite well. Otherwise a new on will be rather costly.
 






No Mustang Maf's came calibrated for the 24lbs injectors in the 90's, the computers were calibrated for them. The mafs were the same for 19lbs and a 24lbs, the 93 Cobra's have a 70mm I think but even they were calibrated for 19's.

It's all in the programming.

it wouldn't matter what MAF you get as long as you're able to program your tune for it.

I say go the proven way, take an SVT Lightning 80mm MAF that you can pick up for next to nothing compared to a new Granatelli ($500+) MAF and tune it for your application.

I was looking at the pro-m MAF, but after doing some research here and noticing about a 50/50 satisfaction rate, I decided to avoid buying their MAF if possible.

You guys spoke of re-calibrating other Ford MAF sensors. Have any of you personally had this done, and if so were you pleased with the results and where did you send it to get the work done?

Doug, you must of been reading my mind because I was going to ask about a good chip tuner next. I know everyone tends to lean towards Apten, but I had sent my computer to them right before Brian left and never saw the thing again. According to Apten they never received it, according to UPS they did, so after that I just ended up having to buy one off e-bay.

Sorry about all the brain picking, I just don't want any avoidable headaches on this project by buying the wrong stuff.
 






I have an 80mm ProM MAF on my truc know and I am not sure about it. I had a custom tune with SCT software to map it out, but I have a high Idle problem and tend to think this may be the culprit. I am going to swap out to a 90mm Lightning unit tomorrow to see what happens.

As for injectors, go with 36lb. The flow well at low load and will have plenty of flow for your boost range.

As for the setup, where are the pictures? What did you use for the intercooler? I have a custom KenneBell/Autorotor setup on my 5.0L Ranger and am in process of making a custom water/air intercooler from a Cobra core right now. I would love to see what you did.

For a tune, I have heard good things about Bama, but I really love the SCT software. I am upgrading from my chip to the software in a few weeks. You can control all engine functions and trans functions. Not bad for $795 with a base tune. Not sure if they have support for the V6 yet though. Check out www.modulardepot.com
 






In time I will be sending pictures, specs, material lists, etc. to anyone who wants to see this. Right now the engine compartment is in a state of absolute clutter and is not very picture worthy.
The intercooler is a air to air unit that I mounted in front of my radiator since I had more space there after I took my A/C out. I was going to try and find a good air to water intercooler but decided against it since this is going to be a daily driver and the air to air unit I have now should be efficient enough for this application.
My whole entire setup I made really isnt too complex except for the intake I fabbed out of heavy wall square tubing by cutting out holes for the lower intake and mounting bolts with a plazma cutter then welding ears to it to bolt the blower down to.
This seemed to be the easiest way to mount the blower since the six ports on the intake are inline and the square tubing fits right on top of it without taking up extra space.
