Ok, I've had to learn everything I know about cars on my own. I know DANA 35 is some kind of gear set for the rear differential right? Can anyone explain to me the ratios (3.07, 4.11)? Hard to install? what about the front wheels when 4x4 is engaged? will it effect speed, acceleration, etc. Any help would be awesome.

The Dana 35 is what you have in the front of your Explorer, and for pre 95 Explorers only.
What you have in the rear is a Ford 8.8 differantial.

What is meant by 4.11:1 ratio is the drive shaft will rotate 4.11 time to every 1 revolution of the wheels. Likewise a 3.73:1 ratio measn driveshaft rotates 3.73 times for every one revolution of the wheels.
If you have 4wd then both front and rear differantials should be the same gear ratio, otherwise you will cause binding of the driveshafts and will cause dammage.
Yes, it is hard to setup the gears. If you don't know what you are doing, you could ruin them in just a few miles driving. This is one thing better left to the professionals.
 






Thanks. I think I will leave it to the pros. Any recommended ratios? Also, what do the explorers come with stock, open or LS? I'm guessing open. Is this easily changed and do you have to change both the front and back? Thanks! :)
 






the open/ls depends on what you have stock... explroers were available with both in the rear... the front stock are open, however you can add a locker or ls to them from the aftermarket...these also dont need to be installed front or rear, but will help in offroad situations.... there is no set way to determine what gears you have stock unless you know the axle code located on the drivers door jamb... and what ratio is best for me depends on how the truck is generally used and also what size tires you plan on running
