just install led

I find my dash lights are too bright when turned up all the way so I turn them down with the dash wheel.

That wheel can get corroded tracks/contacts over time, so you might gain some brightness by cleaning it out (steel wool or metal polish, then a light coat of dielectric grease). After 20+ years it's due for it anyway, or of course replace with a new one but these are pretty easy to bring back to 100% performance with cleaning.

Otherwise, I agree with cober, LED is the way to go for more brightness, but having stock bulbs still, I couldn't tell you which are the best choice. I wouldn't get cold white unless you really really want that look, as the colder color temp, along with being brighter, are going to cause glare and reduce your night vision.

That's why I use green led.
