Has anyone ever changed one of these? Do I have to rip apart my whole dash?

Yes, you have to remove the instrument cluster (I'm assuming you talking about a buld in the instrument cluster)..

to pull the cluster on a first gen.. remove the ashtray.. remove the 2 screws that hold the ash tray holder to the dash...

Now you can just "pull" the front of the dash away from the rest of the dash..

Once thats out of the way you will see the screws that hold in the instrument cluster...

The first time removing it, is the worst.. I can now take mine out in < 15 minutes.. Even less if I use my air wrench to take out the screws

you make it sound so easy. looks like that's what i'll be doin' one of these weekends pretty soon. thanks for your reply.

GO TO THE TIPS SECTION IN THIS SITE AND IN THERE IS A SECTION ABOUT WHITE GAUGES FOR YEARS 91-94, IN THERE SHOULD TELL YOU WHAT TO PULL OFF TO GET TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER...AND BEHIND IT THERE ARE KNOBS...JUST TWIST IT AND PULL IT OFF...SIMPLE...

no need to scream at the guy. jeeze ;) hopefully is isnt one of the ones behind the speedometer, as the speedometer cable needs to come off to remove that gauge. the other gages simply plug into the dash, all you have to do to remove them after pulling apart the dash is give them a yank. have fun!

i'll have to check tonight when i go on my lunch break, but i seem to recall that it's middle left, but i do think the speedometer does come into play. the left side of the speedometer is dark. does this pose a problem as you state with the cable?

Not really, you do have to pull the speedo/cluster out a bit to get your hadn behind it.. then you feel around, find the cable head.. and squeeze it.. The speedo will pull away.. Once you have done it once, it is easy..

Heck, while your in there.. why not short the 20 ohm resister in there and change your oil sending unit to get a real oil pressure gauge (search for "fake oil pressure" for more info)

I think pulling out the dash cluster is a *****... on my truck, it's a ***** to get the 2 wire harnesses unplugged in the back, gotta push the clips perfectly and pull straight out...

sorry...didnt mean to yell...just learning this chat stuff as i go

what kind of bulbs are these? some sort of led i assume? i've gone one out behind by rpms and one out behind my cruise control buttons on the steering wheel. time to pull the dash!

The ones behind the cluster are just the little 194 or equivalent bulbs.

great thanks. maybe i'll try some amber ones. i love the way the amber looks in my wife's audi.

can you change the color of the lights? i was looking at my instrument cluster, i didn't take it apart, though, but it looks like the lights are just white and the cluster has see thru green, red and orange plastic. Is this the case?

I just bought a 97 Sport with what seems to be one light out on the main portion of the instrument cluster--one of the two on the speedo--how difficult is it to get this apart and what kind of bulb is it?
