Hey guys,

I am new to the explorer...after doing lots of research, it seems that the cigarette lighter port doesn't switch off after turning ignition off...this is getting very annoying and frustrating with my garmin gps.

Can anyone guide me on making this auto shut off with ignition? Thanks!!

There is not software setting for this that I am aware of.

And if it did shut off, I'm betting there would be a whole lot more people annoyed who charge phones and things while away from the vehicle with it shut off.

I'd be one of them.......My other vehicle (Mitsubishi Endeavor) has 4 outlets...two of them are in the console and one is always on while the other switches off with the ignition. The one in the second row and the one in the very back are always "on".

I like the feature for reasons above, besides if nothing is connected there is no Charge, much like the outlets in your home.
I have a Tom Tom that is connected, my Tom Tom also charges itself to work when not physically connected- like if you wanted to use in pedestrian mode. If you are worried about having the thing being lit up at night drawing attention to it while you are sleeping, the only thing I can suggested is just get in the habit of powering it down.

Welcome to the Forum Hkalltheway.:wavey: Nice to see another Explorer from Ontario on here.
The auxiliary power points (12V DC) can not be shut off. That is one reason the Owner's Guide says to prevent the vehicle battery from being discharged, "do not leave battery chargers, video game adapters, computers and other devices plugged in overnight or when the vehicle is parked for extended periods."

Suggestion: It would be helpful for future Q&A's if you put which Explorer model you have in your profile instead of just stating 2011 explorer.
Happy motoring.

Peter

You could always rewire the port into a switched accessory fuse that shuts on/off with the key.

The "always on" feature is one of the things I always like about the Fords compared to others that are switched.

No solution to auto power?

After buying the new Explore 2016 all my luxury is gone. Now I have to switch off the Card DVD, Cad Dash Camera, Phone Changers every time I get out of my Car. what a tragedy :( . How come ford not finding this problem, or they think not turning off is a feature?

Welcome to the Forum.:wavey:
The outlets in all my Highlanders were always live. They didn't shut off when the ignition was turned off.
Also, please update your profile with the 'model' of your Ex (Sport, Base, XLT) so it shows in the margin. Thank you.

I am one of those that love the feature that the 12 volt does not turn off when the engine is shut off. The ones that turn off are useless for what I use it for. I do have to remember at the end of the day to unplug but the convenience of having them always on is well worth it for me.

I would tend to agree with you. Although I don't currently have a reason to use them, it would be convenient if I wanted to plug a device in while I'm in the vehicle without having to turn the ignition to ACC.

Pretty simple to do just get a relay and have it energized by any 12v ignition source and have it switch the cigarette lighter power port.

On the topic of always on or not, was in rental Chrysler 200 & they did the brightest idea and provided 2 outlets, one works with ignition & the other on battery. Let the customer choose. One outlet was in the center console box & the other under the HVAC controls.
