Hi there, I used to mess around with the import scence (and i find these trucks are a HUGE improvment - much more fun) EVery year or two I used to 'de-carbon' the engine? Does anyone do this? All i used to do was stray a carb or throttle body cleaner into the egine, let it stall, leave it for a while and then start it up again, and I'd usually see large amounts of black smoke comming out of the tailpipe????? Anyone here do this? It used to help with the milage and over all performance??????

I"ve also used to add a good fuel injector cleaner in the intake, which would produce white smoke while doing it and cleaned out the injectors, similar to the fuel injector service some shops can do. The only thing is you have to get a good, like Chevron injectore cleaner, one that is a catalyst, not a solvent.

I use seafoam with good results. Amsoil makes a product called power foam that does the same thing. And yes, it's a good idea to decarbonize her from time to time.

3M has a great injector cleaner. You need to run the truck off the can of 3M though. That means disconnecting the rails in and out and using the fittings hook the can up. Take the in and return lines and put a tub between them to just complete a flow. Run the truck off the can until it dies. For best results let the truck sit over night then hook everything back together and run the piss out of it. Letting the chemical sit and chew the carbon over night then running the truck will get all the injectors clean. Thats for injectors and it works great.

I would guess the difference between decarboning and injector cleaning is really the chemical, and I would imagine, one would probally help both the injectors and carbon build up - but a decicated chemical for both is best. I've always found it best to do the decarbon first, then fuel injectors then good engine flush with usually a little more fluid than they use at a shop, (or at least let it idle longer) and then fresh synthitic (which has it's own detergents).

Old 94 decarboning

I had a 94 Explorer that had problems running, ect and the dealership did a decarboning thing to it. But I was wondering if I should do that to my 97 Explorer. How exactly did you put the cleaner in the intake? I have used cleaners that you put in with the oil changes and also fuel injector cleaner in teh gas tank, but maybe I should try something more direct. :)
