All,
this didn't feel like a post for the interior/accessories forum. Mods feel free to move as needed.

Here's a YGTBSM event. I go to plug in the Garmin into the 12v pwr in the center console of my 2002 Exp. Well the little black plug disintegrates while I am pushing it in the power outlet. Seems like the little threaded cap that holds the fuse, the spring, metal cap etc came unscrewed so the myriad of little metal bits falls into the 12v outlet as I tipped it down to insert it. SHOW TIME! sparks galore, me flailing to try and get some of this out, just general chaos. Naturally it was night time, I'm old, my bi-focals are near the bed etc etc...lots of expletives. I go inside, get a pencil (only non conductive thing I can find in a hurry) and fish out the little parts.

Fast forward to the next day. Go to the manual, Fuse #24 under the dash says "Cigar Lighter, OBD II", I pull that (Thanks Ford for just sticking the fuse box in a very awkward place with no actual cover, I don't know how an adult is supposed to fit in that space down there, I'll call Santa and have him give me an Elf for next year!) fuse and it is good!? I pull the two next to it in case as I am upside down, in excruciating pain and can hardly read something 3.5 inches from my nose I may have pulled the wrong one, they are all good?

I pop the voltmeter leads into the 12v pwr outlet and it is dead.

In the power distro box under the hood there are two "power points"....what are those? Are they another description for the thing in my center console? My truck doesn't actually have an cigarette lighter in the conventional sense.

Any help would be appreciated.

According to my owner's manual, the 2 fuses in the power distribution box under hood are Maxi Cartridge Fuses. #7 is for Power Point 2, and #9 is for Power Point 1. I assume one is for the power point in the front of the console and one is for the power point on the rear of the console. I would check those. I have never had to change these so I don't know if they are available at the local parts store.

I believe the fuse #24 in the fuse panel under the dash is for the cigarette lighter if you have the smoker's package. The arrow on the right points to the connector for the cigarette lighter. It is snapped in place without the smoker's package as shown:

Hope this helps out.

Big Rondo,
thanks. I don't have a smoker's package so the fuse at #24 for Cigar Lighter could be just a spoofer in regards to the what actually goes on in the console. I didn't even know I had a power point in the rear (So to speak) so I can check that out now.

Had lunch, 30 degrees outside and I need this done, hat, gloves, jacket!!

Good luck. Keep warm!!

Sweet! Plugged the Garmin into the Rear Power Point and it was in fact working, good news. Went under the hood and swapped #7 and #9 and then front PwrPt was working and rear PwrPt not working, clearly the fuse. 30 second fix next time replacing the blown 20Amp fuse. Hope AutoZone has one, not the standard under-dash look. Little plastic box tower.

THanks Rondo for the assist.

Hopefully AZ will have one! Nice when it all works out.

I also picked up a 2002 Explorer, Eddie Bauer edition. Cigarette lighter in front was dead, the one in back for passengers works fine. BUT (lol):

In the picture, the orange connector to the right is ALOT shorter, and not connected to anything (where it goes into the console in the picture there's a removable plastic cap). But it's so short, it wouldn't reach it anyway. This connection is always live, I checked. The one I need to replace is the one behind it, the black and grey one. Trouble is, it's dead. I checked the appropriate fuses (24), it's fine, but haven't checked the Power Point fuses yet. Some things I don't understand, Is, theoretically, I have 3 power points. The orange one, the black/grey one, and the one in the back for passengers. I assumed, falsely, that one was for the 2 in the front, and the other for the one in the back for the passengers, but since I get power from the orange, and not from the black/grey, and also from the back passenger one, that isn't true.
I'm replacing the cigarette lighter that is at the black/grey connection, as the previous owner filled it with Coke or something.. lol, but can't get power to it. I DO get power to the orange one, but again, it is always on, even with the battery out. Any tips on what to check for (will check the power point fuses, but since back and orange work, and black/grey don't, I don't think that's it), would be appreciated.
If I get this fixed, my next job is to get the fog lights working again. It lights up on the dash when I pull the light switch, but regardless of position, no foglights. Fuses good for those also.

It was the fuse, the #7 and #9, one was blown, I simply switched them to check.

Now to find one somewhere, lol, but it also looked like I could solder it myself if need be.

Also, both power points ARE always on. My new lighter has a light accessory, seperate + and -, and when I also plug those in, the light is on 24/7, so no idea how I'm gonna be able to use it (it would be nice). Only way is to run it through a kill switch, which is kinda overkill simply for a lighter... lol

I recently found out, when I tried to charge my phone in my wife's 2006 Explorer, that none of the cigarette lighter jacks in her truck work at all!
I have checked all of the fuses and found none that are open or blown.
What would be common to all cig lighter jacks that would cause all of them not to have power? I have been trying to solve this off and on for years.
