Howdy all. new guy. I just picked up a 92 XLT from a friend. It has some good things and bad. High miles, but runs well and has many new parts.

The drivers window motor was replaced about 2 years ago. I found the receipt in the glove box. Then, a few months later it was replaced again. Now it is dead again. It did work when I bought the car. I've tapped on it with a hammer. It seems like I can hear a click in the express down solenoid.

This car has numerous other electric gremlins and I'm wondering if power supply is a routine problem.

power mirrors are out
fuel gauge inop
temp gauge inop

and the tach operates strangely. It parks at about the 12 O'Clock position, around 3,000 RPM. It moves with the engine but never returns to zero.

Any ideas?

Dan

The power window motors usually have the plastic bushing in them go bad before the actual motor, though sometimes the window regulators go haywire and will burn up a motor in short order. Best to get a new regulator and motor, plenty OE parts up for grabs on the for sale forum on here.

Power mirrors might just be a fuse or relay, same with the gauges, though a new gauge cluster might solve all the gauge issues if they're not issues with the relays, wiring, or sending units. Swapping the gauge cluster and getting the same results would indicate you'd need to replace something else in the system, at least.

Be VERY careful messing with the Regulator/Motor Assembly....

I CUT MY THUMB OFF working on them 2 years ago.

They DID re-attach the thumb, and I do have 95% usage/feeling in the thumb today...

But the springs, and scissor assembly ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY.

was just a dead motor. That started working fine as soon as I whapped it with a BFH. easy fix. I put a new motor in and have the old one for a spare, just in case.

holy crap Ryan, you just scared me out of trying to fix my pass side window

it's easy

it was super easy to change the motor. I never touched the window mechanism at all.

mine had been changed before, so the hole in the door to access the bolts was there already.

disconnect battery
pull the door panel off
locate the 3 bolts holding the motor on
use a small hole saw to enlarge the sheet metal enough to get a socket on the 3 bolts
disconnect connector at bottom part of door; red and yellow wires
remove the 3 bolts holding the motor to the door
remove the motor. Might have to tap it with a small hammer or pry it some with a bar.

install the new motor

Easy.
