Yep. My dealer says they have to download it from the server and connection problems happen, the file gets corrupted, etc. that's why they need a whole day just to upgrade/ reflash.
I really do wonder why they thought this would be a good way to do updates. Hopefully there was some solid logic behind it and not just "We want control".
When you consider the number of vehicles produced, the number in need of an update, and the time lost (both for the dealer and the customer) this becomes an extremely expensive method.
Put it on a USB drive, have a coded access screen, and let it be done during an oil change. In and out in 15 minutes. I was about to say that I would get it done if that were how fast it was, then I realized that a 15 minute easy process would encourage owners to keep their systems updated. By requiring an extended visit, the process becomes a hassle and discourages us from getting the updates. It is well thought out!
This is how they can control the version being loaded. If a CD was sent to the dealer then the tech might install the wrong version from an older CD. It about the control. Also if a computer whiz get a CD of the software it might be possible to hack it.
I actually had a good conversation with the dealer tech who helped me do the v2.8 update.
He mentioned that there are two ways for the dealer to update SYNC.
Standard and Custom
Standard is through the OBDII port under the steering wheel. Pretty much automatic. System connects, reads your vehicle, figures out if your in need of an update and initiates the process.
When I asked him about wiping the old software off and installing fresh he said there is no way to do this manually as the system does it all automatically.
If for some reason the install/download is corrupted or fails then they are instructed to try a custom install which means the tech has to manually uninstall and install each software version.
If it's a custom install, this is when he has to go behind the media hub and pull out the USB (Male) cable and connect into it. Even he couldn't understand why they wouldn't allow a standard USB media hub port to be used.
Unless it was to provide some control on the owners doing major updates themselves.
His guess was that with all the warranty time being billed back to Ford because of MFT that they may start to allow owner version updates in the future.
So the dealer called me. They could not get the install to take and now the nav screen is dead. They have to order a new "module" but will give me a rental . Wtf?
