Ok...where to start. I took my Explorer into the dealer for a new tranny. I got a remanufactured tranny and a few other things fixed - new radiator and output shaft? on the TC.

1 Now it will not go into 4 wheel drive ... or at least it doesn't recognize that it is in 4x4 (i get the 4x4 high and 4x4 low flashing lights). I tried the normal stuff.. disconnecting the battery .. tapping the TC with a mallet, but it's still the same. I put it into 4x4 and sometimes when i turn i can feel it bind, like it is engaging, but the lights don't show that it is in 4wd. Does anyopne have any other suggestions?

This might be related ... when i start the car i hear a "tick" every second for about 5 seconds. It sounds like it is coming from right behind the 4x4 switch. It sounds like a bad switch or something, i don't really know.

2 I hear a "clunk" every time I hit a pothole. It sounds like it is coming from the front left suspension. But I also notice it when i turn. Is it a bad joint or something in a steering coloumn or something? I can even feel it in the floor board.

3 I took it in to get the oil changed a few days ago and they said the tranny fluid is a full quart high... so i have to take it back to a dealer (NOT THE SAME ONE) and get that changed.

While i'm there i want to get my 4x4 fixed so let me know what you guys think.

When the dealer took the tranny out they had to pull the transfer case as well. If the 4wd worked when it went in, it should work when you get it back. This should be taken care of under the dealership's labor warranty. You paid for the job to be done, now they are responsible to stand behind their work.

Why not take it back to the dealer and ask him to tell you what is wrong and drain the extra fluid out of the trans. Shouldnt be any charge for that...

yeah.. i know it won't be any charge.. but these guys gave me problems. they had the vehicle for 37 days ... it's a LONG story and I don't want to take it back there. I was just wondering if any of you have any idea how I could try to fix it before taking it back. Thanks

miciganlander i feel bad that your 96 has given you so much trouble with the trans goin in the dunes, and now this.... that sux! well hope you get things straightened out!

Michigander, I totally understand being unhappy with a dealer, I had a problem with some warranty work on my 2000 ZX2. But that is a long story.... The reason for my response is tell you to contact Ford Customer Service directly at 1-800-392-3673. Tell them about your issues and that you would like another dealer of your choice to fix the problems. Be polite, but firm. I had a very favorable response and was able to get my problems 100% resolved.

Also, I totally feel your pain related to 4x4 problems because I'm experiencing the same type of transfer case problems on my '94 XLT. Good luck!
