97 XL CONTROLTRAC
97 ControlTrac Auto 4WD when letting off the accelerator there is a grinding noise coming from the transfer case I suppose. After this you hear the noise in reverse and the vehicle will not back up. I have quickly learned to deal with this by accelerating lightly while braking to stop grinding noise. If the vehicle will not reverse then I can change to 4WD Low and this will work until the range selector is put into high and it starts the grind again on decel. I depend on this vehicle and know this will cause great damage if left unattended if not already. Suggestions would be appreciated.

It's the transfercase - Torque on Demand Clutch or shift fork is shot. Fix is new t/fcase. Some here have gotten them off of junkers and installed themselves. Pricey dealer/shop fix.

I have the exact problem as Nealhodge. My rebuilt transmission is still under warranty and Aamco claims this is not under warranty. Is that true?

Thank You For The Response On The Transfer Case Issue. I Understand Mechanical Part Failures, But I Have Certainly Taken Alot Of Flack With First Purchase Of A Ford Product Coming From A Devout Gm Family. Regaurdless, I Do Not Regret The Purchase. I Have Added Amenities To My Xl Interior That Makes It Comfortable And Enjoyable. I Love It's Versatility And The Room I Have For My Family Of Five When Necessary For All Of Us To Use This Vehicle As Well As My Equipment. We Have Most Certainly Outgrown A Blazer. I Was Really Enjoying My Ford And Do Believe I Still Will. Now The Hunt For A Used Atc. Is This Problem Prominant In The 97's?

I am pulling my 97 transfercase out this week to rebuild for the same reason. should have it all done by next week. I'll post what I find, The parts from moroso racing at my discount for the transfercase(chain, bearings, and seals) around 300.00.
