Today I was decelerating with my cruise control, by holding down the coast button, and I saw the engine service soon light come on. Then a few more lights, and I realized the engine stalled! I was able to restart without issue.

I repeated the steps again, and sure enough, holding down the coast button stalled the motor again!?

Anyone heard of/experienced this before?

yep, mine does it too. other car companies will turn off cruise at 40ish, these Ex's will try to accommodate till it kills the engine.

Come to think of it, I was coming down from 45mph, to 25 or so. The next time I repeated it, I was at or around 35.

Good variable to note, but still a scary flaw!

Happened twice!

The first time I was coming into city limits with the radio on and passengers and didnt realize decelerating the cc had killed the engine. I feel lucky to have made the turn... It only took one more time to remember not to do it again.

There was another thread about this, some people went through lot of trouble to get it fixed. (Search around here you will find it)
AFAIK there is no 100% fix yet.
One thing in common is that the truck usually stalls at the exact same place.

I used 2005 explorers as fleet vehicles. They had this same flaw all 8 of them acted the same exact way. I believe there is currently a voluntary recall from Ford on this for 98 - 2005 explorers. You might want to check it out because a FREE fix is better then trying to fix yourself.

Yes this happened to me also. It would shut off at the same place every time comeing home from sams club. We would go down a slight down grade and the speed would increase and the rpm's would drop, then the engine would shut down. I took mine to the dealer under warrenty and they fixed it. It has not happened since we take weekly trips to sams club and I try it just to make sure it still runs at the botten of the grade. I do not remember what exactly what they did.

2005 cruise control

my 2005 does the same thing. I called the dealer and they never heard of it?

Weird...I'm going to have to test this out tomorrow

I can join this club, unfortunately.....

I was just going to inquire here about this issue, mine does it either initially accelerating from a lower speed such as after passing thru a gate-less toll booth using the accel button or while cruising (in cruise) at about 40mph.

When mine did it I, under warrenty, the dealer could not make it do it, but reprogramed the computer with the newest updates. I beleve that that fixed it.

Anyone remember a couple of years back on the news where someone in a 3rd gen explorer was on the highway with the cruise control stuck on like 80mph? I dont use my cruise control because i certainly dont want that to happen to me. I would assume that the speed recall would fix this problem. Im not sure if mine does this but i just got the recall done.

does anyone know how to fix this?

yep, just don't use cruise below 45mph. . .this is the first auto that didn't turn it off for you. In fact i've never turned cruise on in City driving, only on the highway doing the same speed for a long time.

There might be a upgraded tune, imho not worth the hassle and time, if there is no flash, i doubt anything is going to be done as these are now 5+years old.

mine is also a 4.0 This seems like a Safety hazard to me.

It is a hazard

Mine has done it again twice since my last post. Since I am aware now, I no longer use cc on long downgrades, and am still alive.
