As a new owner of a 92 in mint shape, I read with interest on another thread about decoding rear end types. I found out i have the limited slip 3.55 gears. Does the limited slip act like positraction or is there a fair amount of wheel spin on one side? How does this gear ratio fare for gas mileage? I find the thing a pig on gas, but I love it otherwise. A 60 dollar fillup will take me around 500kms---300 miles? Is this in the ballpark?
Back to the codes--the springs code is M U. What does this indicate?
The ex is stock with 235-15 tires. Thanks.

Your gear ratio is on the better side of the fuel economy scale...

Just wondering, what is your axle code?

To know your mileage accurately, you need to know miles vs. gallons. $$$ doesn't mean much since prices vary.

Springs, I believe M are front and U are rear. Dunno about the M but I think the U means your rears are pretty stiff.

I had the paper with the codes on it but my wife stole it to write recipies on and it disappeared. I think the code was D4, it is in a thread on this site somewhere.
Gas sells by the lire here and it is around 4 litres to a gallon I think. Gas is 73 cents a litre right now. Damn expensive. Wonder if someone has a list of all codes and options for various years.

D4 is 3.73 limited slip

Yup, the most recent list someone posted was wrong. D4 is 3.73 LS, D5 would be 3.55 LS.

Yea, the incorrect codes are coming from TRS. I have made the mistake of following that list also.

not to be a newby but, i have the 3.73 LS which is 3.73 truns of the driveshaft is 1 turn of the wheel. but what does the LS do exactly, and i mean exactly. PROS and CONS also please:D :D :D

sorry to sound harsh:D :D
thanks charlie

JUST A GUESS WITH THIS ONE BUT COULD "LS"
BE LIMITED SLIP, I KNOW IM GOING OUT ON A LIMB HERE
CHRIS

wow. killing me:eek:  .
i am LAZY, it is too hard to type limited slip, hence LS.
Like i said before what are the pros. and cons.?:frustrate

and welcome to the board, i think:rolleyes:

Yeah--me being a newbie to 4by4 I know it means limited slip--but is it the same as my positraction 69 chevelle? Also---does the front have the same, or will one wheel spin when slipping?
My Chevelle will leave a dual strip for as long as I step on the throttle.

OK,

Go to www.howstuffworks.com and search for Differential. You will learn loads about open and ls diffs.

SIGN GUY, no need to come off so harsh, and please don't use all caps.

hermitrl, the front diff will be open, not limited slip.

Thanks Kindly for the info sir.

I actually checked the site out and it does explain the different terms--my mouse finger is sore now.

AH well that explains something. I was sure I had 3.73 yet the last post had me thinking I was sporting 3.55's Now I feel better about selling brickdriver my gears. Poor guy is sporting 3.23

Sorry about the caps and I was not trying to be brash at all and thanks for the welcome guys

Please direct me to the thread with the decoding rear end types and vin numbers. I am trying to get the rear end ratio on my '95 Ex Sport 4X4. VIN = IFMCU24X2SUA24652
Addtional numbers under VIN = NB 102 - Type GVW - U24C - AXILE 41 - SPRINGS DL

Axle code 41 means you have an OPEN differential, with either 3.27 or 3.55 gears, I don't remember which.
