Decoding VIN sequence number?

How do you decode the VIN sequence number? I need to know because ordering parts requires that you provide whether the motor is from before November 2002 or after November 2002. My sequence for a 2002 Explorer is b87300. 4.6 V8.

Or check your door sticker to see the build date. It isn't as specific as decoding the VIN, but it will give you an idea when your Ex was assembled.
