I saw that someone was gauging the interest on third brake lights, and that inspired me to do an experiment of my own. I have access to CAD software with a 3D print shop, and was wondering if there was any interest in 3D printed OE spec intake hose. I ask anyone interested to like the post or leave a reply, and if I get enough interest I will go to the junkyard and pick up a reference part to start the process.

curious, is there a problem with factory ones aside from lack of availability? do they crack essily?

I have had a big issue finding correct intake hoses for my 2005 sport trac. Someone ripped off the boot that holds the fresh air intake for the engine right off the air intake hose when the went to check the filter. Ford doesn't make it anymore and almost all of them I have found on ebay or online anywhere are for the regular explorer or have extra holes in them that my truck doesn't have a use for. I had to resort to the closest hose I could find and plug the small extra hole and silicone over it for the time being.

interesting. yeah, only thing is is that this is for the 1g ohv not the sohc or v8 like yours. i will howveer say that when i looked online had a hard time finding them

The intake hoses are certainly an item that most of us have replaced or need replacing, and I have seen threads mentioning holes being worn into the plastic of the intake hose where it contacts the radiator fan shroud. However, the primary reason a lot of owners have purchased that hose appears to be the failure of the rubber gaskets on both ends. I used to just buy the decent ones I found at the upick lots and sell them online since there was such a demand for those rubber gaskets, much more than the hard plastic portion.

It seems that the 1st gen isn't the only model where intake hoses are hard to find. I was also planning on using flexible plastic on both ends as part of the print since they were the part that broke the most.

I posted a link to mazda a couple months ago, and received a response back from the website support confirming they were still available .
Someone else posted a link to ali*, where a bulk option was alledgedly available.

Edit: prioviding link again

Yes to all. Hard to find in good shape, plastic gets old and brittle. Ford abandoned anything it made after 10 years with parts support. I remember when they used to support their products for 20 years.

It’s the accordion pleats that disintegrate, all mine did, and junkyard replacements when I could find them in the past.

Well then here’s your chance to replace it. How much are the NOS OEM ones, now? $200?
It would come to a bit under that after shipping as I recall . Plenty of explorers have shown I up with decent ones at junk yards for my needs.

It would also be possible for me to just sell the accordion sections to replace the OEM.

if you do a 3d print make sure the base material is able to handle the heat from under hood

I was planning on printing the entire thing from ABS, so I don't think heat will be a large problem

yes, yes absolutely yes.
I've been looking for this plastic AIR INTAKE hose for my 1994 Ford Explorer XLT! The hose I have is brittle & the clamps are worn & not tightly sealed anymore.
My car has 114,000 miles. And still runs great. The body looks good.
The window trim on the side leaked a bit so I put some sealant around it...looks sketchy : ( but it doesn't leak now.
The rubber seal around the back 'flip up' glass hatch window was worn. I put new rubber seal & black monster tape to hold it in place, LOL.
NOT the best hacker w/ my repairs. But I have RE-covered the dash with a nice dash cover.
I next want to RE-cover the interior roof lining...its got tears & gaps & sags.
I love this car and it refuses to die.
I'm hoping to get another 2-3 years outta 'ol Betsy'.
I do regular oil changes and maintenance (from a couple of decent mechanics!)
But I could some advice from a FORD EXPLORER enthusiast to keep her running & looking good!
TY Darcy
