1994 Explorer XLT
Hello:

I thought I would share some insight for which I paid dearly for.

I have a 1994 XLT 4x4. The "Check Engine" light came on sporadically and then stayed off. Not long after that, the torque converter in the transmission did not "lock-up" into its final position, causing me to lose about 400-500 RPM.

Then I noticed that the vehicle would ping badly on inclines.

I took the Explorer to local Ford dealership where it was evaluated. I was informed that everything was perfectly normal. No problems were found. Odd. I don't suspect that I was halucinating when I experienced the symptoms. Off to next Ford dealership. Same response. Odd.

So I continue to operate the vehicle. I was forced to purchase the highest grade of petrol available to mitigate the pinging. Most frustrating.

Within 6 months the transmission completely failed and had to be rebuilt. Even with the new transmission the RPM looked to be too high and that something was not shifting or engaging properly. Most unnerving.

On a whim, I decided to have Oxygen Sensor replaced.

Shocking news! The transmission problem was suddenly cured and the detonation problem was also eleviated. Armed with this information I proceeded to the Ford dealer and explained what I had discovered.

There response was equally as shocking: "Oh, that's right mate, sometimes the Ox sensor mucks up the brain box and doesn't allow the transmission to shift as well as advances the timing.

Thank you. You've been most helpful.

Glad you figured out your problem, but there is a way to clean your MAS/MAF (whatever they call 'em these days!) You can find it using the search function.
