You need to check the gear ratios.
Theres a sticker on the drivers door jamb, looks like the one below, the area you need to look at is circled in red, get that number or letter and number combination.........

picture.php

Then, use the chart below to see what you have and what the other truck has

Explorer
Door Code/open or limited slip/ratio
41....….…… Open 8.8"…...….. 3.27
42..…..……. Open 8.8".….…... 4.10

45..…..……. Open 8.8".….…... 3.55
46..……..…. Open 8.8".…….... 3.73
D1..……..…. L/S 8.8".…...…... 3.27
D2...…..…… L/S 8.8".…...…... 4.10
D4...….……. L/S 8.8".…...…... 3.73
D5..……..…. L/S 8.8".……...... 3.55

Other than that, most things will swap over. What, exactly are you thinking of swapping over?

EDIT:
If you decide to just replace the front differential (if the gear ratios are the same) then you will have to get a new front driveshaft to fit the 98, the 96 will not fit. The 98 uses a CV style joint on the transfercase end of it, while the 96 (or most of them) have what is called a double cardan joint on the front driveshaft. They are not interchangable.

thx for the the reply thats the kind of info i needed
they are both d4 axle codes
could i change the ends around on the driveshaft to make it work
only going to change what i have to
wanted to know what would work before i spent any money
thx noel

If you use the 98 transfercase, you have to get a front driveshaft that has the CV joint on one end. (runs around $200 or so) The double cardan type will not bolt up. (No you can not take the double cardan joint off and add the CV style joint to the driveshaft)
You could take the transfercase out of the 96 and bolt it up to the 98 transmission so you could use the front driveshaft from the 96. The 96 t/case will have electrical connections that you will not need on the 98 truck (the wires will not be there to plug into the t/case). It is the speed sensor, the 98 has the speed sensor in the rear diff.

thx for that reply,if i can change the t/c and save 200 that sounds like a no brainer to me
