I did locate a single previous post but wanted to be sure this is the same issue, and confirm how to get by until able to get it repaired.
I have a 98 Mountaineer 5.0L. Intermittently starting yesterday when I remove the keys and go to exit the vehicle, it dings as if the headlights are on or the keys are in the ignition. I confirmed that the headlights are off, and the keys are definitely removed.
I confirmed all sorts of oddities such as: all doors and windows are closed tightly, turned the autodimmer to off, properly set in Park, deliberately started then turned off and removed the keys - then locked the wheel. Still, every time I open the driver side door, the persistent dinging alert sounds.
The post http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227619 indicated it is a ignition switch malfunction. A couple of questions (and my apologies for my inexperience):
1) Is there a fuse that might have blown? Doesn't seem to make sense since it starts normally.
2) Is battery drain something to be concerned about? If so, should I disconnect one of the terminals so I can be sure I can get to the shop for replacement if need be? Can someone confirm which terminal, or both, to disconnect?
3) Are there any other possible causes that I should look into? Any suggestions for repair?
4) What would a rough cost of an ignition switch replacement be at a shop?
Thanks in advance to everyone for their help and suggestions.
