MY 1992 XLT has an alarm system that I think was factory installed, but im not sure as its had a few owners before me. It has a flashing red light to the left of the steering column. THis alarm system never did anything besides beep when I hit the button on the remote and scream when i reconnected the battery.

I had the truck worked on and when I got it back, the alarm system went off whenever I opened the door without hitting the right button, or started the car after it had armed itself (thich it did after about 30 sec).

Now the remote is broke (no, its not the batteries) and I have to do some jimmying with the wires to start the truck. I suppose i could order a new remote, but I'm looking for something more permanent. How do i disconnect it?

It sounds like you have dealer installed alarm system (not factory).. Anyway look under the dash for the alarm valet switch (They usually put it in a very noticeable place). This switch is used as a manual override to disable the alarm if you (or the valet you give the key to) doesn't have the remote. Anyway with the Key on (the alarm will sound if active) turn the valet switch and the alarm system will be disabled. NOTE: Do not turn the switch without the ignition key set to run or else the alarm will sense an intrusion and cancel the affect of the switch...

BTW you indicate the alarm auto arms itself after 30 secs... If you get a new remote and wish to use the alarm in the future you can probably disable this feature... You just need to locate the make & model of your alarm and we can look up the procedure... some are internal dip switches and others are programming sequences...
