I'm trying to remove the exhaust on a '94 Xplorer to take out the transmission, but I can't get to the O2 sensor connectors. What's the trick and what was Ford thinking when they put the connectors behind the block? OMG!!!

I can't speak for a '94, but on my '92 I've found that the "easiest" (relatively speaking) way to get to the rear O2 sensor connector is by reaching through the wheel well (maybe turn the wheel out of the way).

Because mine only has one O2 sensor, I don't know how they routed the driver's side sensor wire.

As for answering why the Ford engineers routed the wires behind the block, I really don't know. I've thought a couple of times of cutting an old O2 sensor and adding a couple of extra feet of wire so I can get the connector out where it can be reached.

thanks but the '94 has 2 sensors. I can barely see the connectors if I lay on the engine and look in front of the firewall. This is another reason to install a body lift.
